Retrofit of an Alternative Fuel Conveying System
Biomass-based and waste-derived alternative fuels, also known as secondary fuels, make an important contribution to the ecological and economic transformation from a linear economy to a circular economy.
As an alternative to fossil fuels, alternative fuels are used either in dedicated alternative fuel power plants or in co-combustion processes. In this project, alternative fuels are combined with fossil fuels and utilized in a co-combustion process.
To increase the proportion of alternative fuels, the existing conveying system for alternative fuels was to be expanded by adding a parallel conveying line and a second feeding point. To achieve this, existing conveying components such as a feed hopper, screw conveyor and a conveying system with a tubular steel frame were to be reused and combined with new steel structures.
The project scope included the development, design, fabrication and installation of the components.
The solution was designed to allow the alternative fuels – partially dried sewage sludge, paper sludge and storm-damaged timber – to be delivered by truck and fed into the refurbished feed hopper. A connected screw conveyor transports the bulk material out of the hopper and feeds it onto the adjoining inclined belt conveyor. The alternative fuels are then transferred via a reversible belt conveyor onto the existing conveying line.
Project facts
- 21 tonnes of steel used
- 9 Roskopf employees were involved in the project, from technical project management and engineering through to the installation team
- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the expansion of the project scope, 14 months elapsed from the initial inquiry to final acceptance
